Leogate – Home of the World’s Best New Wine
2011 “The Basin” Reserve Shiraz Wins an International Trophy at the International Wine Challenge
“Len Evans would be delighted. His favourite vineyard has been honoured as having produced the grapes for the World’s Best New Wine” say Bill and Vicki Widin of Leogate Estate Wines and Brokenback Vineyard.
The 2014 International Wine Challenge awarded the “James Rodgers Trophy for the Best Wine in its First Year of Production” to Leogate Estate’s 2011 “The Basin” Reserve Shiraz (RRP $115). When accepting the award in person at the gala dinner, Bill and Vicki Widin attributed the Trophy both to Len Evans’ attention to detail in establishing Brokenback Vineyard, and to Mark Woods’ superior winemaking skills. “The Basin” had earlier also been awarded the Trophy for the best Hunter Valley Red Wine.
Qantas selects Leogate for First and Business Class passengers
An Australia-wide wine selection process, evaluating 1,200 wines, was recently carried out by a panel of eleven top ranking sommeliers for the Qantas International and Qantas Domestic wine lists. Leogate Estate is honoured to announce that:

2011 “The Basin” Reserve Shiraz wins Trophy at the International Wine Challenge
After receiving a Gold medal in the International Wine Challenge, judged in London, the 2011 “The Basin” Reserve Shiraz then went on to collect the Trophy in the “Hunter Valley Red Wine” category. This cool style Shiraz style with bright fruit, savoury notes, supple tannins and great drinkability clearly pleased the judges as did our 2011 “Western Slopes” Reserve Shiraz and 2013 “Creek Bed Reserve Semillon” which both received Silver medals.
2011 Western Slopes Shiraz declared Wine of the Year!
John Lewis, Wine Writer for the Newcastle Herald, has declared Leogate Estate’s 2011 Western Slopes Shiraz to be his Wine of the Year for 2013.Also taking out the titles of Red of the Year and Shiraz of the year, Leogate’s 2011 Western Slopes Shiraz has been a much celebrated wine winning a total of 7 medals and 2 trophies in 2013 alone. These are fabulous additions to the 9 medals and 4 trophies awarded to it in 2012.
To receive this accolade from a highly regarded wine writer really is the icing on the cake and a credit to the winemaker Mark Woods and his team.
